This is a list of the various purposes and uses for the Tsuba (handguard) on a Japanese sword, it does more than just protecting your hands from your opponents blades cutting you. A sensei I know says the Tsuba is basically like the shield to your sword, it's only 4" but when used properly it's like a 12" buckler. Weapons used in video are the Cold Steel O-bokken and a white oak bokken.
